Happy Birthday
BMW Group Switzerland

For 50 years, BMW AG has been successfully operating in Switzerland as an import and sales organization. But BMW Group Switzerland is more than just a vehicle distributor in Switzerland; it's an integral part of the country. As an employer with over 400 employees at its headquarters, and as a sales organization comprising 65 BMW dealerships, 16 BMW service partners, 36 MINI dealerships, and 23 BMW Motorrad dealerships – employing around 3,300 additional staff across Switzerland – it is a significant part of the company. Furthermore, there are 30 Swiss locations of suppliers and approximately 30 Swiss companies that supply the BMW Group's global production network from 140 locations worldwide.

50 Years in 20 Acts

1975

BMW Holding AG acquired the majority of MOTAG's shares and officially renamed the company a year later to the BMW (Switzerland) AG known today.

1978

For the first time, more than 10,000 BMWs were registered in Switzerland. A large share of this was due to the BMW 3 Series, which, like us, celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025.

1985

BMW launched a model we are particularly proud of: the 325 iX, the first BMW with all-wheel drive. It was also developed thanks to strong demand from Switzerland.

1990

BMW (Switzerland) AG first appeared as a financial service provider with «BMW-Leasing» and has since made a significant contribution to the success of the BMW Group Switzerland.

1999

Sales figures were around 12,000 passenger cars and 1,500 motorcycles. The 3 Series was once again the bestseller.

2000

We exceeded the 1 billion euro revenue mark for the first time. At the same time, the BMW X5 was launched – a symbol of our all-wheel-drive expertise.

2001

The iconic MINI joined the BMW family. The MINI was a sensation – small, cheeky, full of emotion. It appealed to a new audience: young, urban, individualistic.

2002

In Switzerland, the MINI achieved a 6.5 percent market share in its segment, a top European figure. In addition, the Swiss Army ordered 400 F-series motorcycles from BMW.

2003

The groundbreaking ceremony for our current headquarters at Industriestrasse 20 in Dielsdorf took place.

2005

The new office building was officially inaugurated.

2006

Our partnership with Peter Sauber's racing team at the time began and the BMW Sauber F1 Team was born.

2007

We sold over 20,000 vehicles in Switzerland for the first time. In addition, BMW launched its Efficient Dynamics program, which remains a key focus.

2013

The BMW i3, our first all-electric production vehicle, arrived in Switzerland. Not a conversion – but a completely redesigned electric vehicle.

2017

It was another record year: More than 30,000 BMWs and MINIs were sold – a record that still stands today. BMW Motorrad reached 4,800 units.

2020

Then came Corona. We mastered the difficult time – with team spirit, reliability and close relationships with dealers and customers. Our market share grew to over 11 percent.

2022

We were able to deliver the world's first BMW iX converted for police use.

2024

We almost returned to pre-Covid levels: over 25,000 registrations per year. BMW remained number 1 in the premium segment and – measured by passenger cars – became number 1 in the overall market for the first time.

2025

BMW is the market leader in Switzerland. The share of electrified vehicles has increased by 31 percent compared to the previous year. MINI is also on a successful course: almost 25 percent more new registrations than in the same period last year.

2026

Market launch of the BMW iX3, launch of the NEW CLASS.

2028

The BMW Group's first production vehicle with hydrogen propulsion is being launched.
